Yesterday, we ran a creative art session at Llanrumney Hub, where ten participants took part in portrait painting on mini canvases.
The session began with sketching — exploring proportions and outlines — before moving on to acrylic painting to add colour and personality. Step-by-step guidance was offered throughout, allowing everyone to work at their own pace and style.

Some attendees had painted before, while others were completely new to art, but everyone embraced the activity with enthusiasm. Conversations flowed naturally as people shared stories and offered encouragement to one another. By the end, each person had created a unique piece that reflected their individuality — and the room was filled with laughter and pride.

From an Occupational Therapy perspective, this type of activity offers so much more than meets the eye.Art-based sessions help to:🎨 Promote focus and mindfulness – painting encourages people to stay in the moment and enjoy the process.💬 Build social connections – sharing creative space helps people feel included and valued.💪 Support motor skills and coordination – sketching and brushwork gently exercise fine motor control.💖 Boost confidence and self-expression – completing a piece of artwork brings a real sense of achievement.
It was inspiring to see how creative engagement can unlock memories, spark conversations, and strengthen community bonds. We’re already looking forward to the next session and welcoming even more people to join in.
If you’d like to get involved, come along to our upcoming group — everyone is welcome, no experience needed!
