Why CwmpasOT’s approach works (and why it actually matters)

At CwmpasOT, the work isn’t random or “nice ideas that feel helpful”. It’s built on occupational therapy science and real-world evidence. That means we use approaches that have been tested, researched, and shown to improve people’s lives in mental health and community settings. One of the key foundations behind this is the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). This helps us understand something simple but powerful:

People feel better when they can do meaningful activities, build routines, and feel confident in daily life.

CwmpasOT services also draw on structured, evidence-based interventions like Recovery Through Activity, which turns theory into practical steps that can be used in real sessions with real people.

So what does “evidence-based” actually mean?

It means:

  • We don’t guess

  • We don’t rely on “one size fits all”

  • We use research + outcome tools + lived experience

  • We adapt based on what actually works

In simple terms:We check what helps people, and we do more of that.

The 5 key things that drive our work

Everything we do links back to five areas from MOHO:

1. Motivation (what matters to you)

People engage more when activities match their interests, values, and goals.

So we don’t ask:“What programme do we offer?”

We ask:“What matters to you?”

2. Routine (building structure that sticks)

Regular activity helps people feel grounded.

We support people to:

  • rebuild daily routines

  • create rhythm in the week

  • stay connected socially

3. Skills (what you can do right now)

We look at both physical and mental abilities and build from there.

Not too easy. Not too hard. Just right for progress.

4. Environment (what’s around you)

Where you live, who you’re with, and what’s available matters.

We use:

  • community spaces

  • group sessions

  • home and digital support to make engagement easier and more realistic.

5. Growth (long-term independence)

The goal isn’t just attendance.

It’s:

  • confidence

  • independence

  • identity rebuilding

  • meaningful living

Why personalised support is so important

No two people are the same.

That’s why CwmpasOT uses informal assessments and goal-setting conversations to understand:

  • what people enjoy

  • what they struggle with

  • what they want to change

  • what success looks like for them

This means support is shaped around the person — not the system.

What this looks like in real life

In practice, CwmpasOT services might include:

  • group activities that build confidence and routine

  • one-to-one sessions focused on personal goals

  • community-based engagement to reduce isolation

  • structured activities that slowly build independence

  • flexible support that changes as needs change

Why this matters

Mental health recovery is not just about reducing symptoms.

It’s about:

  • doing more of what matters

  • feeling capable again

  • rebuilding identity

  • reconnecting with life

Our approach works because it combines:

  • research

  • clinical reasoning

  • structured tools

  • and real human connection

The simple takeaway

CWMPASOT services are evidence-based because they:

✔ are grounded in occupational therapy science (MOHO)

✔ use structured, tested interventions (like Recovery Through Activity)

✔ focus on what actually improves daily life

✔ adapt to each individual person

✔ measure and respond to outcomes
