Yesterday, we had the pleasure of running a vibrant, laughter-filled session at Sandown Court, where residents joined us for an engaging quiz-style activity focused on proverbs, similes, riddles, and finish-the-lyrics challenges.

These seemingly light-hearted games are more than just fun—they are powerful occupational therapy tools that support cognitive function, communication skills, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of identity.

  • 🧠 Cognitive stimulation: Activities like proverbs and riddles encourage problem-solving, memory recall, and mental flexibility.

  • 🗣️ Communication skills: Sharing similes and lyrics sparked wonderful conversations, offering everyone the chance to express themselves creatively and socially.

  • 🎶 Emotional connection: The music round in particular brought up shared memories and lots of smiles—reminding us how music can reconnect us with our personal history and bring joy in the present.

  • 🤝 Meaningful engagement: These activities were designed to be inclusive and enjoyable, promoting a sense of purpose, belonging, and accomplishment for all who took part.

As occupational therapists, we know that meaningful activity is essential for wellbeing. Sessions like this are not only fun—they're therapeutic.

Thank you to everyone at Sandown Court for your energy, humour, and wisdom. We look forward to seeing you again soon for more memory-sparking fun!
