Today at Grand Avenue we held our third physical activity session, designed to support both movement and social engagement. The morning began with a lively singalong of “We’ll Meet
Again”, accompanied by musical instruments, which helped set a warm and welcoming tone.
The group then took part in a series of accessible, fun activities including balloon batting, seated football, target throwing, and hoopla. These activities are more than just games—they help maintain coordination, balance, and physical strength, all of which are essential in supporting independence in daily life. Research shows that physical activity in later life not only enhances physical health but also boosts mood, reduces anxiety, and encourages social interaction (World Health Organization, 2020).
The session closed with more music, returning to “We’ll Meet Again” and other familiar songs. This combination of movement and music is particularly powerful; studies have highlighted that pairing physical activity with music can further enhance motivation and recall, supporting both body and mind (Davidson & Faulkner, 2010).
We look forward to continuing this programme, with our next session focusing on creative engagement through clay work.
