Last Monday, we had the pleasure of running a creative session at Thomas Court, where residents made beautiful clay wall hangings. Using air-dry clay, everyone designed and

shaped their own pieces, which they then painted with acrylic paints. The final step involved threading the pieces together using yarn—transforming individual elements into one-of-a-kind hanging artworks.

Those who didn’t finish during the session were given materials to complete their creations during their next craft group the following week, even without us there. This helped promote sustainability and ongoing engagement, encouraging creativity and independence beyond our session.

Occupational Therapy Benefits

🎨 Fine Motor Skills – Moulding clay, painting, and threading yarn all required precision and hand control, helping maintain dexterity and coordination.

🧠 Cognitive Stimulation – Designing the layout and sequence of the hanging involved planning, sequencing, and decision-making.

💬 Emotional Expression & Self-Identity – Everyone’s artwork reflected personal choices and creative flair, offering an opportunity for self-expression and pride.

🧵 Continuation & Sustainability – Providing materials to complete the work later supported routine, purpose, and independence, extending the therapeutic value beyond a single session.

🤝 Social Connection – The relaxed, hands-on activity created space for conversation, sharing ideas, and encouragement, strengthening community bonds.
