Yesterday at Minton Court, our older adults group enjoyed a hands-on session that combined creativity, conversation, and connection. This clay crafting session was more than just an art activity — it was an opportunity for participants to express themselves, create something meaningful, and enjoy a sense of achievement.

Participants began by rolling out air-drying clay, using shaped cutters to form their pieces. With water and gentle rubbing, they smoothed the edges to a soft finish. They then used straws to make hanging holes and stamped the names of loved ones into the clay with letter stamps — each piece becoming a heartfelt token to give to someone special. 💌

Alongside the craft, the group chatted, shared stories, and even listened to poems recited by one of the members — bringing a warm, reflective atmosphere to the afternoon.

Why This Matters

From an occupational therapy perspective, these types of group activities are incredibly beneficial for older adults. They help:

🖐️ Enhance fine motor skills and hand strength through tactile engagement

🧠 Stimulate cognitive function through planning, sequencing, and creativity

💬 Foster social interaction and reduce isolation, which is vital for emotional health

🎯 Promote a sense of purpose and identity through meaningful activity

Research shows:

✅ Older adults who take part in community-based arts activities show improved wellbeing by up to 22% (Noice et al., 2014)

✅ Purposeful activity supports positive aging and reduces the risk of depression and cognitive decline (World Health Organization, 2015)

✅ The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (2015) highlights that meaningful activity is a core element in maintaining independence and wellbeing in later life
