Last week, our group got creative with an easy, festive activity: crafting snowmen and pumpkins using socks and rice! Participants filled socks with rice to create a sturdy base, then decorated each figure with colourful pom-poms and mini hats made from cut-up socks. Each snowman and pumpkin became a unique character, reflecting each creator's personality.

Therapeutic Benefits

This simple, hands-on project offered more than just a seasonal decoration. Here’s how it supports well-being:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Filling and shaping the rice, handling small pom-poms, and tying hats encouraged fine motor control.

  • Creativity and Self-Expression: Choosing colours, arranging decorations, and creating characters fostered creativity and self-expression.

  • Social Interaction: Working on a shared project in a group setting encouraged conversation, laughter, and connection, which is especially important for combating isolation.

  • Sensory Engagement: The soft textures of the socks and rice, combined with the tactile process of filling and shaping, provided valuable sensory stimulation.

This festive craft activity turned out to be a wonderful way to bring holiday cheer while offering therapeutic benefits, making it a favourite in our group!
